Database and Pennsylvania Graduation Projects

I live in Pennsylvania. In order to graduate from high school, each student must complete a graduation project. Pennsylvania's regulations are:

"The purpose of the project is to demonstrate that students have the ability to gather, apply, analyze, synthesize and evaluate information and communicate significant knowledge and understanding." The Pennsylvania Code, "PA Code, Title 22, Section 4.24. High school graduation requirements." March 2002 http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/022/022toc.html

To me that says database. I brainstormed a list of possible database projects for students. This list is directed toward public service. If you are a student who is looking for an idea, please help yourself.

Database Projects:
Contribute your County's data to the Census Online Project -
http://www.us-census.org/ http://www.us-census.org/help/1900.html

Do a census of a local cemetery for the County Historical Society.
List name / dob / dod / any known relatives (if clear from placement in cemetery family plots).

Create a database (master list) of yearbooks from elementary schools, Intermediate School, MS & HS that are available in the district’s holdings. Consider asking for donations from the community to fill in the gaps.

Create a database of a plant / bush / tree survey of all District campuses.

Create a database of County Public Recreation sites. Include services available like restrooms, tables, playground equipment, hours, athletic fields.

Create a database of businesses/services of interest to teens. Conduct a survey to find out from the teens. Places to get video games, athletic equipment, music, clothes, to eat or get together.

Create a database of local organizations that serve teens/kids - Conduct in school survey to find them. Examples: AYSO, 5th Quarter (after home football game dance for preteens staged by a local church), scout troops, support groups, social services etc. Provide online or make pamphlet.

Create a database of local organizations in which teens/kids are welcome to volunteer.
Post the info in High School web site.

Create a database of all the scouts in your region. Note those that achieved top awards like the Gold Award or Eagle scout.

Create a database of supplementary events students can participate in like: science fairs, knowledge quizzes, Math24, Spelling bee, Geobee, student government away meetings, writing contests, SADD and so on.

Create a database of past school Student Artists that includes bands, murals, plays, musicals and other special performance events.

Create a database of past school Student FAA members that includes awards / positions / outstanding stats. Also history of FFA at SAHS.

Contribute to a database of past school Student Athletes that includes awards / positions / outstanding stats / coach. Could do a specific year of a specific team.

Create a database of sheet music available to District’s Music departments.

Do a survey of cars students own / drive. Compile the data in spreadsheet/database. Publish results in HS newspaper or yearbook and/or website.

Do a survey of students’ music preferences. Compile the data in spreadsheet/database. Publish results in HS newspaper or yearbook or SAHS website.

Do a survey of students’ reading preferences. Compile the data in spreadsheetdatabase. Publish results in HS newspaper or yearbook or SAHS website.

Do a survey of students’ food preferences. Compile the data in spreadsheet/database. Publish results in HS newspaper or yearbook or SAHS website.

Do a survey of students’ movie preferences. Compile the data in spreadsheet/database. Publish results in HS newspaper or yearbook or SAHS website.

Do a survey of students’ video game preferences. Compile data in spreadsheet/database. Publish results in HS newspaper or yearbook or SAHS website.

Do a survey of students’ leisure time activity preferences. Compile data in spreadsheet/database. Publish results in HS newspaper or yearbook or SAHS website.

Do a survey of students’ extreme sports preferences. Compile data in spreadsheet/database. Publish results in HS newspaper or yearbook or school's website.

Contribute to a database that records past local High School graduation projects.

Create a database of local famous folks with brief biographies.

Create a comprehensive database of local government agencies - who, where, when, what services.

Create a database of local historic places. Place online in the school district's or Historical Society's site. You could work with the VA to do a local veteran's database. Make a CD of the project and contribute it to the region's libraries.

Work with Food Service staff to create a database of meal/menus

Create a book database and help your favorite elementary teacher enter all their classroom SSR books.

If you are the coordinator for Graduation Projects at your district, you should most certainly be using a database to organize and track it. Have each student create their record. Include name address, project title, check boxes for each segment - proposal, research paper, project, presentation, evaluation. Use the database to track progress and to generate communication like date of presentation, commendation certificates, letters to parents about status and more.

More info on graduation projects:

It was left to each district to design their own guidelines and requirements.

Here is the project as described in our school district.
