Elementary Envirothon

Students from fourth, fifth, and sixth grade participated in the 1999 Elementary Envirothon. The theme this year was Forest Habitat. Thirty seven teams from 14 local schools sent teams. The event took place at the Lancaster County Central Park. All participants received a tee shirt and many prizes were awarded.

The theme was provided to the school in advance. Materials and speakers were provided to help the students "bone up" on forest facts. Students volunteered to participate and preparation time was in addition to their regular studies.

The teams of five students circulated around four stations. Each station centered on a topic like cavity nesters and forest animals. Students answered questions and identified animals, trees, and plants.

Although our teams were not big winners, they gave it their best effort. We are very proud of them all. Many of the participants look forward to participating again next year.

The Conestoga PTO provided financial support to the event.

By the way, that is not a white tailed deer fawn at the far right!

Teachers and parent volunteers served as coaches/escorts for the teams.
